Report of The 9th Scientific Conference and 3rd Quadrennial General Meeting

August 2010

This is a report of the meeting held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Lusaka, Zambia, from August 23 to 25, 2010. The theme of the conference was, "Revitalising Primary Health Care and Achieving the Millennium Development Goals." The main objective of the conference was to explore and share research findings, best practices, and experiences on how revitalizing Primary Health Care in nursing and midwifery will enhance achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Child Sexual Abuse

July 2011

The Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Child Sexual Abuse is the first comprehensive regional document to focus entirely on the clinical management of CSA. These guidelines respond to the Health Ministers' Resolution passed during the 54th session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for Africa in 2004 entitled Child Sexual Abuse: A Silent Emergency (AFR/RC54/15 Rev.1). Existing global, regional and national resources have informed the development of this document.

Validation of the Clinical Criteria for "Presumptive Diagnosis" of Severe HIV Disease in Infants and Children under 18 Months, Requiring Antiretroviral Therapy in Situations where Virological Testing is Unavailable: Final Report

December 2010

The main purpose of the study was to validate the utility of the WHO 2006 clinical criteria for presumptive diagnosis of severe HIV disease in infants and children under the age of 18 months in situations where virologic testing is not available. Its primary objective was to determine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of the WHO clinical criteria for presumptive diagnosis of severe HIV disease in infants and children under 18 months in correctly predicting the need for ART. It also sought to document other clinical signs not included in the current WHO clinical criteria for presumptive diagnosis of severe HIV disease in infants that are predictive of need for ART initiation.

The implementation of interventions proposed in this publication will enhance efforts to focus attention on the health dimension and public health burden occasioned by GBV that may have received limited attention even as stakeholders sought to address the human rights aspects of GBV and child sexual abuse. Report of the Final Evaluation of the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community Strategic Plan 2004-2007

May 2008

Between June and July 2007, an evaluation of ECSA-HC's strategic plan was conducted. The purpose of the evaluation was to review the implementation of the plan with a view to identifying successes, achievements, challengers, constraints and lessons learnt in the course of the Strategic Plan implementation. A further objective was to identify the health priorities, issues and challenges within the ECSA region, and learn lessons that could contribute to the development of a new ECSA-HC strategic plan of 2008-2013.

Repositioning Family Planning Toolkit

August 2008 (The section on Family Planning in Sub-Saharan Africa was updated in 2010)

This toolkit aims to help those working in family planning across Africa to effectively advocate for renewed emphasis on family planning to enhance the visibility, availability, and quality of family planning services for increased contraceptive use and healthy timing and spacing of births, ultimately, improved quality of life across the region. It was developed in response to requests from several countries to assist them in accelerating their family planning advocacy efforts.
