Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Child Sexual Abuse
July 2011

The Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Child Sexual Abuse is the first comprehensive regional document to focus entirely on the clinical management of CSA. These guidelines respond to the Health Ministers' Resolution passed during the 54th session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for Africa in 2004 entitled Child Sexual Abuse: A Silent Emergency (AFR/RC54/15 Rev.1). Existing global, regional and national resources have informed the development of this document.

Child Sexual Abuse: A Silent Social and Health Emergency Reena Borwankar, Gender and Gender-based Violence Advisor, Africa's Health in 2010, represented partner organization East, Central, and Southern African Health Community (ECSA-HC) at the Annual Conference of the American Public Health Association, November 2010 in Denver, Colorado. She presented a poster on child sexual abuse at the conference, the theme of which was "Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative."

Child Sexual Abuse: Magnitude and Implications for Advocacy and Policy in Sub-Sharan Africa Reena Borwankar, Gender and Gender-based Violence Advisor for Africa's Health in 2010, presented a poster on child sexual abuse at the XVIIIth Congress of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) held in Hawaii, September 2010. The poster was accepted under the sub-theme "Identifying, Treating and Preventing Family and Sexual Violence" and the theme of this year's Congress was "One World, One Family, Many Cultures" Click to view a PDF of the poster

ECSACON Keynote Address Project Director of Africa's Health in 2010 project, Dr. Doyin Oluwole, presented the keynote address at the East, Central and Southern African College of Nursing (ECSACON) 9th Scientific Conference and the 3rd Quadrennial General Meeting held August 2010 in Lusaka, Zambia. Dr. Oluwole discussed strategies to revitalize primary health care to work toward achieving Millennium Development Goals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Click to read the full text of Dr. Oluwole's address.

Nutrition et tuberculose Revue de littérature et considérations pour les programmes de lutte contre la tuberculose In Africa, tuberculosis (TB) is the most common cause of death from a curable infectious disease. The nutritional consequences of active TB are well recognized by clinicians, yet little is known about effective nutritional management, nor of the interactions between TB treatment and nutritional status. Women: Drivers of Change In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, 2010, Project Director Doyin Olowole gave a presentation titled, "Women: Drivers of Change - Involving Women in the Workplace, Leadership Careers, and Health Innovations." Presented at AED's new Globe Theater, Dr. Oluwole outlined three basic strategies to improve health outcomes for women all over the world. These strategies include: tapping into the power of women as drivers of change, creating change in women's health, and generating and disseminating the evidence, tools and information.

Health Information Needs in West Africa: Results of a Survey on the Role of the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO)
In August 2008, the Academy for Educational Development (AED)/Africa’s Health in 2010, in collaboration with the West African Health Organization (WAHO), conducted a needs assessment survey of 25 health information professionals from 11 of its member states. The survey identified the type of health information needed by health professionals in the region and the role that WAHO can play in addressing the information needs of member states. Respondents suggested among other things that WAHO can contribute to the health information needs of the West Africa sub-region by having a central repository of documents and materials on its website that can be accessed directly by users in the member states.

Africa 2010 raises awareness of magnitude of GBV in sub-Saharan Africa:
On April 20, Africa 2010’s Gender, Gender-based Violence Advisor, Reena Borwankar, and Elisabeth Sommerfelt, Senior Maternal-Child-Newborn Health Advisor at the Academy for Educational Development presented at a panel discussion on Gender-based Violence in sub-Saharan Africa, at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, in Washington, DC. Saving Mothers, Newborns and Children
Inadequate access to skilled care has been implicated for the growing incidents of maternal and neonatal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. In response to this problem, AFR/SD worked with Africa’s Health in 2010 to partner with several institutions to advance child survival and improve maternal, newborn and child health in sub-Saharan Africa. A five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Africa, Office of Sustainable Development (AFR/SD) and operated by the Academy for Educational Development (AED).

The project provides strategic, analytical, communications and advocacy, and monitoring and evaluation technical assistance to African public and private institutions and networks, and USAID mission and regional programs to improve the health status of Africans.
